Ingredients
- 2 oz rye whiskey
- 0.25 oz absinthe (rinse)
- 1 sugar cube
- 3 dashes Peychaud's bitters
Method
Rinse a chilled glass with absinthe, discarding excess. Muddle sugar with bitters in a separate mixing glass, add whiskey and ice, stir, then strain into the prepared glass.

Background & History
Widely considered one of the oldest American cocktails, closely associated with 19th-century New Orleans and originally made with Cognac before rye whiskey became standard.
